Until the 1970s, the islands of the Maldives were largely a hidden gem. In 1972 our owning family partnered with an Italian travel agent to open the first resort, Kurumba Maldives. Dive enthusiasts from Italy, and soon from all over Europe, began to flock to the pristine waters of this tropical paradise.

Today, the Maldives still tops the lists of best diving spots in the world. With its crystal-clear water, warm temperatures, white coralline sand and rich marine life you would be hard stretched to find a better diving experience.

A long history as a diver’s paradise

When Baros Maldives was opened in 1973, it was one of only three tourist resorts in the country, catering largely for divers from Europe in Robinson Crusoe-style thatched huts. The island resort has since been beautifully reimagined by local architect, Mohamed Shafeeq, with its luxurious accommodation being a far cry from those original huts inhabited by those early diving tourists.

Although Baros has perfected and curated its offering to become one of the most luxurious island resorts the Maldives has to offer, diving is still a major reason why guests find Baros to be so enchanting.

The dive centre– Divers Baros Maldives, was first opened in 1979 and is one of the first PADI five-star Gold Palm Resort Dive Centres in the country. Diving highlights

Our house reef is world class – swim with sea turtles, rays and a myriad of colourful fish including butterfly fish, trumpetfish, surgeonfish, harlequin sweetlips and damselfish. You might also chance a meeting with our (harmless) resident black tip shark, Finny, with a missing dorsal fin.

At night enjoy the wonder of Fluo Night Diving, where, equipped with blue lights and a yellow filter on your mask, you will see certain marine life radiating fluorescent colours of yellow, green, pink and blue.

For those looking for a more tailored diving experience, Baros has just the pick. With Diving by Design, guests can pick and choose from a selection of dive sites, duration of excursion and the mode of transportation. Guests can take to the seas on our dive boat, traditional sailing boat Nooma or even our luxury yacht Serenity.

Divers Baros was the first EcoDive Centre in the Maldives to be recognised and certified by International Reef Check, which monitors the health of coral reefs around the world.

When diving at Baros, our resident marine biologist will teach you about reef biodiversity and conservation, as well as coral propagation through our Coral Cube initiative. Corals are shelters and nurseries for many of the marine species that call Baros home, offering protection from strong currents and waves.
