The Baros house reef is home to three types of reef sharks: whitetip, blacktip and nurse sharks. It is also home to Finny, our resident blacktip shark with a missing dorsal fin.
When an adult shark loses its dorsal fin, it greatly impairs its ability to balance while swimming and to catch prey, which could lead to starvation and death.
Finny was born in the Baros lagoon around 15 years ago. It is unclear how exactly she lost her dorsal fin, but it is believed that other adult sharks might have injured her while hunting. She lost her fin at a very young age but miraculously adapted and lived on into adulthood, even giving birth to two litters of pups.
In 2018, during a snorkelling tour at our house reef, we discovered another black tip shark without its dorsal fin patrolling the reef side by side with Finny. Finny had found a friend! These two quickly become a favourite of divers and snorkellers. The difference between the two was minimal but through the years we have learnt how to distinguish them from each other. They are now Finny and Finny II, obviously.
Both sharks are still present daily on our tours. Try your luck at finding them at our amazing Baros house reef.
